WHAT IS FEMALE SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION?

Many women can experience recurring and sometimes continuing sexual dysfunctions which can start at any point in their lives. It can be just for a short period of time, or it can be continuous, and often lead to a feeling of inadequacy. Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) often times shows up as a lack of sexual interest. However, some women will still have the desire for sex and intimacy, but have difficulty or and inability to become or stay aroused. Others will have difficulty or inability to achieve orgasm. And some will experience pain with vaginal contact - or sexual stimulation of the vagina.

WHAT CAUSES FEMALE SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION?

Women can begin suffering from FSD after illnesses, like cancer or diabetes, but it can also be triggered by menopause or even childbirth. Anytime there is a major hormonal shift in the body, FSD can present itself. As the estrogen levels lower due to physical, hormonal, social or psychological influences, there is reduced blood flow reaching the vagina, which leads to less sensation, a thinner vaginal lining, and dryness which can lead to painful intercourse - which will reduce the desire to have sex.

WHAT CAN I DO FOR MY FSD?

Balancing your levels of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone will help greatly. In the instances where there is low libido, or no desire, an increase in testosterone will help to reawaken that interest in sex. Aligning the estrogen to progesterone will also help increase the blood flow to the vagina, increase the natural lubricant, and decrease dryness.

WILL ESTROGEN REPLACEMENT HELP?

When the cause of the female sexual dysfunction is hormonal, estrogen replacement therapy is definitely a positive step toward treating it - however it's important to take into account the other sex hormones and make sure they are at the proper levels as well. Using bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, we can ensure that the levels of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone are in balance.

WHAT CAUSES ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION?

Random or infrequent loss of erection during or leading up to intercourse can be caused by a number of factors. Did you have too much to drink that night, are you in an unfamiliar place, or with an unfamiliar person? Have you been experiencing a lot of stress at work or in your family life? Sometimes it can be you had some anxiety that led to the inability to 'seal the deal'. 

 

The good news is most of those times are just flukes. You will be able to perform better the next time. So don't dwell on it. Focusing on a past failure can create more anxiety and can result in compounding factors that eventually lead to continuous performance problems.

YEAH, THAT SOUNDS LIKE ME. WHAT CAN I DO?

Chronic inability to achieve or maintain an erection can be caused by this large mental road block you've inadvertently created through constantly worrying about disappointing your partner. When this is the case, it's best to talk with your partner, or a professional counselor who may be able to help you work through process and get passed the performance anxiety.

 

Erectile dysfunction can also be an indication of a mechanical problem within the penis itself. Sometimes this can be due to an injury, medications you may have taken, recreational drug use, or in more serious cases, it can be caused when the mechanism that traps the blood in the penis to make it hard, no longer works. This is also known as a 'venous leak'.

 

There are also times where the inability to have an erection can be caused by deeper issues like cardiovascular disease, nerve damage, or neurological conditions.

WILL TESTOSTERONE REPLACEMENT HELP?

In cases where the dysfunction is caused by lack of testosterone, you will definitely get positive results by rebalancing this hormone. However, if this is a mechanical problem, pumping your body full of a hormone that is expecting you to be able to do something about it, is going to cause further frustration.

WHAT TREATMENT OPTIONS DO YOU OFFER?

We recommend a combined approach of oral medications (such as Viagra, and Cialis) with balancing hormone levels, and if needed - using pump therapy. While there are other options available that include daily injections into the base of the penis, or small pellets that are inserted into the urethra, we currently do not offer those at this time, and do recommend starting with a less invasive approach.

Be sure to stay active - physical exercise an improve the condition. Drink plenty of water and follow a healthy diet. If possible quit smoking and limit alcohol use.
